We consult with a LOT of aviation companies in a LOT of different business situations.  Some are ambitious startups, others are established companies with hundred-year-old traditions and established clientele.

All of them contact us because they’re wondering the same thing:

What is the most effective use of my limited marketing budget?

While the answer differs depending on a number of factors, there is one item that always ends up  at the top of our suggestions – create a newsletter!

And although this has been our advice, until recently we’ve struggled with being able to provide a newsletter we can be proud to offer our clients at an affordable price.

And one thing that most of the marketing experts out there agree on, and that’s held true in our experience, is this – a mailed newsletter is far more effective than an emailed one!

Here’s how we use Newsletters to promote our business:

DSC 0003 300x240 NewslettersJohn and I have a lot of experience in business, especially in technology and finance.  When we decided to devote attention exclusively to aviation clients, we used what had worked in technology and finance. And we wanted to keep costs contained.

People thought we were crazy to start a business, in aviation, in this economy.

We knew that the traditional methods of advertising in aviation were these:

1) Advertising in glossy magazines, and

2) Direct mail

Both of which are expensive.  We wanted to prove (to ourselves, our prospective clients, and everyone else) that the aviation industry had “evolved” to where advertising on the web was just as effective as it was anywhere else in the economy.

Boy, were we wrong!

While we did find clients (more accurately, clients found us) because of our search engine optimization, our great content, and our social media efforts, we found that business was building much more slowly than we expected.

We experimented with campaigns that used a mix of media. We tried prospecting using postcards with some success. We tried placing advertisements in glossy magazines with almost no results (except a huge bill!)

We also tried sending our newsletter in the mail in addition to email newsletters.

Printed, mailed newsletters made the biggest difference of ANYTHING we’d seen!

Maximizing the Profit of Every Customer

We quickly figured out that simply selling more marketing services to more clients was not the best way to boost profits since it takes so much time and money to acquire each new client, learn their business, start up new marketing systems, and start getting results for them.  We needed to concentrate on selling more of our higher profit margin items.

OPPORTUNITY: We did some research on the marketing packages that brought in the most profit with the least amount of time and effort on our part and discovered that we could put them into packages that clients really liked.

PROBLEM: The only problem with this strategy was that most of our clients “knew what they wanted,” which was to commit more “random acts of marketing.”  They wanted a brochure for this trade show or a  sales letter for that campaign – bits and pieces of work that were not coordinated with their other marketing efforts and therefore not as powerful for them, or as profitable for us, as a complete marketing system.

Henry Ford once said that “If I gave customers what they wanted, I’d be selling them a faster horse.”  (Rather than the Model A!)

We realized that we needed to educate customers about how to market their products and services effectively using a complete marketing system.

SOLUTION:  We began writing articles and even books about marketing in the aviation industry to educate our customers about the benefits of having a complete marketing system. While these were well-received by people who already agreed with us, we were “preaching to the choir”  – convincing clients who were already convinced because they were already getting great results from having complete marketing systems.

We needed to reach out to out clients who hired us for occasional jobs, or to people on our mailing list who had not become clients yet because they did not yet understand the key differences between our organization and our competitors.

These are busy people.  And they’re already bombarded with advertisements and overloaded with emails.  Our marketing mentors, including Dan Kennedy, Bill Glazer, Jim Palmer and others, helped us develop a newsletter format that was fun, easy to read, and delivered solid information in every issue.  People started to call us and complain if they missed an issue!  That was when we knew that we were on to something.

And our sales improved. While much of the material in our newsletters is also distributed by email and on our blog; we discovered that the primary decision makers are not subscribing to RSS feeds or reading us on their iPads. At least, not yet.

Most of them refer to the newsletter when they make a purchasing decision.  Many of these phone calls, even to clients who have been on our “prospect” list for months, start the conversation that ends in a purchase this way:

“I’ve been reading your newsletters for some time now.”

“We’ve been passing your newsletter around the office and discussing some of the ideas in it and we realized we should give you a call and ask about . . .”

“I’d heard this before, but when I read it in your newsletter, it dawned on me that this is really what our business needs right now.”

I not only mailed the newsletter to our entire database of customers, I also mailed it to a targeted list of prospective customers.

Big Secret: As I wrote articles for the newsletter  I imagined that I was having a conversation with the readers, as if we were sitting across the table at a coffee shop.  I explained the advantages of a complete marketing system, using descriptive language that clearly painted a picture of benefits to them.

For example, instead of simply writing a headline such as You Need A Complete Marketing System (how boring!), I wrote a descriptive headline that tied in with the news of the day, like The DOW is down again – How Long Cycle Marketing Works in a Poor Economy  This got everyone’s attention!

We also used the newsletter as a prospecting tool and distributed it at trade shows and even asked our clients to send extra copies to their suppliers, colleagues and clients in aviation that could use some help with their marketing.
